Louisiana GOP sacrifices bestiality law on altar of homophobia

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: The modern Republican Party.

In Louisiana, a proposal to strengthen the law against bestiality is facing unexpected opposition from conservative lawmakers who see it as an underhanded move to strike the state’s unconstitutional ban on sodomy.

“This bill was written because the far left wants to undermine our other laws that protect family and traditional values that the people of Louisiana hold dear,” said Sen. Ryan Gatti, a Republican who was one of 10 senators to vote against the bill.

Where to even begin …?

The thing is, they could have made the plausible argument that the state already has a bestiality ban on the books and that the party of Small Government and Fiscal Responsibility and whatnot is opposed to expanding a legal definition that’s already sufficient. They could even have argued – and I’d agree – that it’s a waste of the legislature’s time and taxpayer money to pass laws to cover problems that are so rare as to be practically nonexistent. It would still have been evident what their end goal is, but at least it might have let them save face.

But they just had to stick to their anti-gay guns, even at the cost of being publicly labeled as the party that prefers letting humans have sex with animals over allowing consenting adults of the same gender – and species – to get it on. Particularly given that the anti-sodomy law is blatantly unconstitutional and is one court challenge away from being stuck down anyway.

US legislatures haven’t passed one anti-LGBTQ bill this year

Every few weeks or so comes the news that some state Republican legislator has introduced a bill that would chip away at some aspect of LGBTQ rights – ban same-sex adoptions, strip away workplace anti-discrimination protections, block trans people from using the proper restroom, and so on. Their number seems to have increased visibly since Trump took office, as various anti-gay factions – okay, it’s mostly evangelical Christians – feel emboldened. This can seem rather disheartening.

But for those who’ve been following the course of these bills through state legislatures, the reality is stark, and in a good way: Not a single one of these discriminatory bills has been enacted this year.

In the thick of this year's legislative sessions, LGBT activists were tracking about 120 proposed bills that they viewed as threats to their civil rights. Not one of them has been enacted as many sessions now wind down; only two remain under serious consideration.

A key factor in the shift: In the Republican-led states where these types of bills surface, moderate GOP lawmakers and business leaders are increasingly wary of losing conventions, sporting events and corporate headquarters.

North Carolina, Indiana and Arizona were among the states that faced similar backlash in recent years over such legislation.

"Being anti-equality is not considered good politics anymore," said legislative specialist Cathryn Oakley of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBT rights organization.

It’s easy to look at the crop of regressives currently in charge of the federal and many state governments, as well as the hordes of howling yahoos who put them there, and feel that the country has taken a massive step back. But the illusion is dispelled when you look at the actual numbers: Being anti-gay, or even perceived as anti-gay, is becoming prohibitively costly for politicians, in both money and votes. And as those are the only things most politicians pay any attention to, most are smart enough not to jeopardize their capital by going against the public tide. Mind you, 2018 is still young, and there may well be some asshat somewhere who manages to get a bigoted piece of legislation signed into law. But as things stand, they’ll always be in the minority, and it’s not usually long before a court strikes such laws down, anyway.

It’s always good to be reminded that the regressives are losing. Of course, that’s all the more reason to keep at it.

They claimed they’d announced themselves and that he fired at them first, and an “oversight” agency claimed the shooting was justified; his surveillance camera proved they lied about everything. The shooters and prosecutors have now given him a $2.75 million settlement.

Trump admin. enacts new trans military ban

The Pentagon had until tonight to institute Trump’s policy to ban trans servicemembers, and characteristically, Trump signed the order at the last minute. Months of legal challenges later, the trans military ban is now in place:

Following a Pentagon policy review after a tweet by President Donald Trump last year, the White House said the policy will say "transgender persons with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria -- individuals who the policies state may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery -- are disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances."

According to a Pentagon memo about the policy, exceptions to the ban include people who have been "stable for 36 consecutive months in their biological sex prior to accession," servicemembers who "do not require a change of gender" and troops who started serving under the Obama administration's policy prior to the new memo.

It doesn’t matter what excuse or rationale they bring up to bolster this move; it won’t hide the fact that this is no more than a gift to Trump’s regressive base, the same that has a conniption at the thought of trans people using the right bathrooms. The facts were already clear when Trump first tweeted the policy change last August and they’ve only been hammered home since: Thousands of trans troops are already in the US armed forces, they serve every bit as competently and professionally as their cisgender comrades, and throwing them out would only weaken the military, not strengthen it. (It’s never been made clear just how throwing out thousands of dedicated soldiers, trans or otherwise, is supposed to strengthen the military’s combat readiness.) This is discrimination in its plainest form.

The lawsuits are guaranteed to keep coming, so it’s anyone’s guess how it’ll turn out. But I’m not holding onto hope; in the end, the executive branch has the power to implement whatever conditions for enlistment it wants, barring anything blatantly unconstitutional. Trans people were already banned up to 2016; there’s little reason things couldn’t go back to that.

John Oliver examines (and expertly trolls) Mike Pence

If you aren’t watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver every Sunday night, you should be – or at least catch the full segments his team puts on YouTube shortly after the show airs. Last night’s episode centered around Mike Pence, that creepy religious-regressive former governor of Indiana who’s now the one official in the White House Trump cannot fire. Oliver covers Pence’s views on everything from his contempt for women in the military to his support of “conversion therapy” (a fancier way of saying “pray the gay away”), along with his affiliation with the Christian-patriarchal group Focus on the Family.

Pence is the reason efforts to get rid of Trump before the next election are shortsighted – Trump is terrible in large part because he’s clueless and incompetent at everything, but that’s also been a saving grace as he keeps sabotaging his own worse moves. Mike Pence, on the other hand, is smart and politically experienced. Impeaching or otherwise removing Trump would mean replacing him with his next-in-command, and if Trump is the frying pan of stupid, Pence is the fire of pure religious zealotry.

The best thing voters can do is castrate them both in the November midterms, and then toss them out for good in 2020.

Bermuda becomes first nation to repeal same-sex marriage

So far the world’s nations have been gradually moving towards same-sex marriage rights, with the only place that’s ever gone backwards being California after Prop 8. Now, following a referendum and legislative approval, Bermuda becomes the second jurisdiction and the first nation to repeal marriage equality.

The Governor has given assent to the Domestic Partnership Act 2017, Government House has just confirmed, meaning the legislation can now take effect.

In a statement this afternoon [Feb 7], Governor John Rankin said, “After careful consideration in line with my responsibilities under the Constitution, I have today given assent to the Domestic Partnership Act 2017.”

The Domestic Partnerships Act passed in the House of Assembly, and then passed in the Senate and will replace same-sex marriages with a domestic partnership which can be entered into by both same-sex and heterosexual couples.

The Minister of Home Affairs claims the new domestic partnerships allow for all the rights and protection afforded to married couples, which sounds nice if true … but then why bother creating a “separate but equal” class of partnership to begin with? Sounds like it’s no more than an attempt to appease the bigots who voted in the 2016 referendum – which wasn’t binding, so the government had no obligation to honor the discriminatory position.

Very disappointing. And hopefully not the start of a trend.

“Traditional values” politician cheats on wife: Australian edition

The most predictable joke in the world goes Down Under:

He’s the man who strongly opposed gay marriage, arguing it was against traditional family values. Now it’s been revealed Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is expecting a baby with his former staff member, after leaving his wife of 24 years.

Mr Joyce’s former wife, Natalie, said she was “deeply saddened” by the affair given her husband’s former media adviser-now live-in girlfriend Vikki Campion had been a welcome visitor to the family home.

“This affair has been going on for many months and started when she was a paid employee,” Mrs Joyce said in a statement.

I guess “traditional values” means betraying your spouse and shacking up with your employee. Or is it still cheating on your cancer-stricken wife with your future second wife, who you then cheat on with your future third wife whilst simultaneously attacking the President for having an affair? Or is it cheating on your wife with a porn star and then paying her $130,000 to keep quiet? Honestly, it’s just so hard to keep it all straight.

Joyce is also very peeved that people aren’t respecting his privacy:

“I think once we start going through this salami slicing of a private life, where does it end?”

A politician who tried to control the private lives of millions of others is complaining after his own misconduct attracts scrutiny to his private life. Let that sink in.

Honestly, and this may sound a little naive, but I’m astounded that anyone who claims to represent “traditional values” isn’t immediately laughed out of any room they’re in.

Illinois Republican candidate’s ad mocks feminists, trans people

Illinois Republicans sure have a fine couple of candidates on their hands: for Congress, they have a proud actual Nazi who calls the Holocaust “an international extortion racket”, and for the governor’s office, there’s current State Rep. Jeanne Ives, who just released this campaign ad that tells you everything you need to know about the sort of person she is:

Various actors portray people whom Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s (R) policies have supposedly benefited. This includes a deep-voiced man in a dress that reveals chess hair thanking Rauner for “signing a^[sic] legislation that lets [them]^* use the girls’ bathroom”, and a “pussy hat”-wearing woman thanking him for “making all Illinois families pay for [her] abortions”. It also features an Antifa-like masked man who says Rauner “oppos[es] law enforcement” and made Illinois into “a sanctuary state for illegal immigrant criminals”, and a Black woman wearing a “Chicago Teachers Union” shirt saying he “ma[de] the rest of Illinois bail out Chicago teacher pensions”, amongst others.

This is Illinois, not Alabama, so the state’s top Republican official hurried to denounce the ad, calling on Ives to take it down and apologize. So naturally, Ives is defending it.

"What the commercial that is generating the expected hysteria from the expected quarters attempted to do — admittedly, provocatively — was to properly and truthfully characterize the extreme issue positions Rauner took and their implications. The commercial does not attack people. […]

The transgender man, that’s exactly what, typically, a transgender man looks like (groans in the audience). Sir, with all due respect, I’ve had them show up at my door, so ..."

I thought that hideous caricature was supposed to be of a trans woman? Ives can’t even keep her own prejudice straight.

Once again, you have the Republican Party trying to distance itself from a flaming bigot, yet they still haven’t figured out why flaming bigots keep flocking to their camp.

Canadian PM Trudeau proudly defends abortion and LGBTQ rights

Unlike a majority of Americans, I can express a fair amount of pride in my country’s leadership, and our head of state in particular. Here’s the latest example showing why, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau full-throatedly stands up for women’s and LGBTQ rights when asked why his government no longer subsidizes religious groups that work primarily to undermine those rights:

No religious group is going to be barred from Canada’s Summer Jobs on the basis of their beliefs, period. […]

However, there are certain groups that are specifically dedicated to fighting abortion rights for women and inclusion of LGBTQ communities. And that is wrong. That is certainly not something that the federal government should be funding summer students to do, to roll back the clock on women’s rights. That’s not gonna happen. This government will continue to be unequivocal. We will stand up for women’s rights, we will defend women’s rights, and the rights of the LGBT community, regardless of what folks in certain religious groups try to push us against.

You have organizations out there, like the Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform that have been receiving thousands upon thousands of dollars of government money — of taxpayer money — to distribute hateful fliers of aborted fetuses to try and convince people to remove the right of a woman to control her reproductive choices. That is not something the federal government is going to fund.

We are not rolling back the clock on women’s rights. And I know that makes a few people upset, but there is no way government funding is going to organizations that have the specific and explicit purpose of limiting women’s rights, period.

When’s the last time you heard any national leader stand up for women and the LGBT community, or any minority group for that matter, against the religious-Right with such intensity? We Canadians may be a polite bunch (so I hear from Americans who’ve never driven on Canadian roads), but try to fuck with our citizens and you’re in for … well, a scolding, anyway.
