It’s just now coming out that Doug Jones, a former prosecutor who locked up KKK extremists, has won Alabama’s Senate seat over Roy Moore, a Christian-fascist and serially accused child molester who was twice kicked off the Alabama Supreme Court for violating the law.
Doug Jones has become the first Democrat in 25 years to win a US Senate seat for Alabama after a bitter campaign against Republican Roy Moore.
The 63-year-old former prosecutor's victory deals a blow to Republicans, narrowing their majority to 51-49 in the Senate.
The election took a twist when Mr Moore became embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls.
Mr Moore, who was backed by President Donald Trump, denies the claims.
Mr Jones is a former lawyer known for helping convict two Ku Klux Klan members who bombed a black church in 1963 in Birmingham, killing four girls.
I’ll let wonkier people than I analyze the numbers and debate the ramifications for future elections (I’m pretty sure political gamesmanship is an actual contagion at this point). Myself, I’ll just try to enjoy this without thinking too much about how millions of Alabama voters brought the race to the brink of victory for a man who preyed on underage girls.
That blue belt you see swooping down and across the Alabama election map is the Black Prairie Belt. Fertile soil in the belt brought cotton plantations. The plantations brought slaves. The descendents of those slaves who stayed after emancipation are why the belt is blue.

Dear black folks: We don’t always deserve it, yet you pull us out of the fire and again and again. Thank you.

He’s not wrong.
