It’s the usual routine: Wake up (in my case in the early afternoon), take a gander at the news, and facepalm at whatever fresh hateful stupidity is wafting from the White House that day. This time, it’s the sitting President of the United States retweeting virulently anti-Muslim videos from a fringe British hate group to his 43 million followers.
Donald Trump has retweeted three anti-Muslim videos posted by the deputy leader of the far-right British political party Britain First.
The videos originally posted by Jayda Fransen are captioned "Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!", "Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!", and "Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!"
Following universal condemnation from British politicians, a spokesperson for prime minister Theresa May said: "It is wrong for the president to have done this."
Britain First is so politically insignificant that it doesn’t have a single elected seat in parliament. The videos are predictably bullshit: The “Muslim migrant” who beat up a Dutch boy was neither Muslim nor a migrant, and was subsequently arrested; the one showing a man being pushed off a rooftop took place during the 2013 overthrow of Egyptian president Morsi and one of the men responsible was executed; and the video showing the Virgin Mary statue being destroyed can’t be sourced. None of these show that Muslims are predisposed to violence or that they bring such violence with them when they emigrate.
Following widespread denunciations by everyone from the British government and press to InfoWars and Breitbart, the White House leaped into action and … defended the indefensible. Because there is nothing so blatantly abhorrent these sycophants won’t condone so long as Trump does it.
However, the White House defended the tweets, with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders saying: "Whether it's a real video, the threat is real. His goal is to promote strong border security and strong national security."
Because if there’s an argument to be made for banning travel from Middle-Eastern countries, it’s that one Dutch teenager attacked another and some randos in the comments made up stories about his religion, or that some Muslim dudes somewhere broke a statue, something I’m sure no Christians have ever done in all of history.
