Religious-Right loons obsess over Nazis and voodoo hypnotism

I know I just said I’d go back to ignoring the kooky figureheads of the religious-conservative movement, but the brave bloggers at Right Wing Watch published something featuring nutty ravings about “Nazi propaganda” and “voodoo hypnotism” and now I have to know what on Earth it’s about.

[Right-wing preacher Lance] Wallnau said that he got a spiritual word of warning 10 months ago about Nazi symbols over the United States, which he said was not a warning about a rise in racism and neo-Nazism but rather a rise of “the Nazi strategy of propaganda that is being used right now by the media-Democratic industrial complex in order to brainwash America so that they can recapture control and hopefully remove Trump from power.”

Wallnau said that the Left is using “Nazi tactics” and “Nazi propaganda” to demonize “the Right, and Donald Trump, and Christians, and every white person in America who voted Republican.”

“It’s basic voodoo hypnotism 101 for a good propagandist at the Nazi party,” he said. “And that’s what the Left is doing.”

Huh. I’ll be honest, I always thought my voodoo was subpar – I’d rub dolls bearing the likeness of my parents against pictures of puppies all day and they still never got me a dog for my birthday. Maybe I was just doing it wrong.

Seriously, though: People listen to this guy. Enough for his shtick to be profitable. What more proof do you need that there is no god?

Wallnau isn’t the only one obsessed with Nazis, though. Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver, the worst lawyer in the country not named Larry Klayman or Orly Taitz, wants you to think that being a homophobic Christian in 2017’s America is just like being a Jew in the 1930s’ Germany:

“I think we’ve crossed the line and we can’t let this go any further. We’ve got to push back, it cannot happen like this. You know, if you go back into the 1930s, what ultimately happened back then with the Jews—and history, you know, there’s other histories you can point to—but they began to ultimately ban Jews from public employment, then ban Jews from their private employment, then put a Star of David on their ID and a Star of David on their passport, restrict their travel, restrict their income opportunity, and eventually you know what happened, we had to fight a World War II over that issue.”

Of course, as one of my favorite fantasy writers once pointed out, anti-gay Christians are less like oppressed Jews and more like the dwindling Neanderthals raging impotently at the more evolved humans taking over their lands. Though, as he later pointed out, that comparison is too charitable to the homophobes; Neanderthals were physically and cognitively outstripped by modern humans, making any fair competition impossible. Meanwhile, gay-bashing Christians have every opportunity to join the rest of us in the 21^st Century.
