It seems the world is back on the brink of nuclear war, thanks to a power-mad, saber-rattling tyrant in North Korea and another one in the US. And as always, war hawks are all in a tizzy over the possibility of a new conflict, regardless of the costs.
For the perfect encapsulation of the neoconservative mentality, look no further than this interview on Sean Hannity’s radio show with retired USAF officer and Fox News contributing loon Thomas McInerney:
HANNITY: The nuclear fallout, correct me if I'm wrong, even if we use, you know buster -- bunker bombs, and other technologies, is -- the fallout potential is dramatic. I mean, potentially -- am I right, or overstating the fact that millions could potentially die here?
MCINERNEY: Yeah, but they'll be mostly North Koreans.
Oh. Well, when you put it that way, the nuclear annihilation of a country of 24 million people is much more palatable.
The warmongers (mostly on the Right, but also a fair few on the Left) are so eager to see the US flex its military muscle yet again that they don’t spare any thought to the thousands, or indeed millions, of civilians who stand to suffer for it. But then, they’ve never even pretended to care about the hundreds of thousands of civilians lost in the US’s various conflicts overseas in the last couple decades (and before anyone asks, President Obama didn’t spare them much thought, either), so it’s not at all surprising that they’d erase the victims of their actions from consideration now. For them, demonstrating the US’s military dominance is all that matters; any bystanders in the way should’ve just known better than to be there. Or else, they’re a part of the faceless, monolithic amalgamation that is “The Enemy” and thus deserve everything they get.
