The NRA has a new ad (well, new in that I’ve just heard of it), and I don’t know whether it’s comically absurd or outrageously anti-democratic:
They use their media to assassinate real news.
They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler.
They use their movie stars and singers and comedy shows and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again.
And then they use their ex-President to endorse the Resistance.
All to make them march; make them protest; make them scream “racism” and “sexism” and “xenophobia” and “homophobia”; to smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the law-abiding, until the only option left is for the police to do their jobs and stop the madness.
And when that happens, they’ll use it as an excuse for their outrage. The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth.
I’m the National Rifle Association of America and I’m freedom’s safest place.
Leftists are fragile snowflakes who pose a violent threat to freedom itself. Also, violence is bad, so better join a pro-gun group. Because freedom is worth protecting by force, but only if the right people are allowed to use it.
And of course, never mind how the bulk of the accusations in that ad were, in fact, the de facto methods of protest used by the Right under eight years of President Obama. It should be evident the NRA isn’t the most self-aware group.
There is one cause for hope: The comments beneath that ad are quasi-universally opposed to it. These are from the NRA’s own page:
I'm tearing up my membership. This is UnAmerican. Not ok. WE are not supposed to be an us/them society. Differing views is what makes this nation great.
Who's "they" that she refers to repeatedly? I prefer to refer to my fellow Americans as "we". In fact, I feel it's the only way that "WE" can finally work towards compromise so that "we" Americans can all feel safe again.
We are all Americans. This breaks my heart. It is horrible and divisive and incendiary. Does the NRA want Americans to shoot each other because they disagree politically? Are we to fear and shoot each other? What's the end game here? It's is irresponsible and shameless. #foundingfathersrollingintheirgraves
America might just make it after all. And that would be despite the NRA’s best efforts.
